How to Impress a Marquess is a humourous, yet not particularly historically accurate historical romance. If you like your historicals with a heavy dose of realism back away now. If you’re like me, and accuracy doesn’t bother you that much, continue reading.

Susanna Ives is an author that first came on my radar with Wicked, My Love, a funny on-the-road-romance between two very different people. I loved Wicked, My Love so I was quite anxious to dive into Ives’ latest historical, which again features two characters who do not like one another due to their preconceived notions of one another. Naturally, these two discover that appearances can be deceiving. (more…)

I’m a huge fan of Mary Balogh and have loved her Survivors’ Club series. Naturally, once that series ended a new one had to begin. Someone to Love is the first in Balogh’s Wescott series featuring a family that finds itself neck deep in scandal when the head of the family dies and it is discovered that he had a secret wife and child, which makes his second marriage invalid and those children illegitimate. Miss Anna Snow is that illegitimate child, and discovering that she’s an heiress is almost like a dream came true. However, for Anna, what the bigger draw is the discovery that she has family: half-siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, and a grandmother. Of course, becoming part of that family is no simple task, especially when that family is shocked at her existence.

Aiding Anna is Avery Archer the debonair Duke of Netherby, who normally wouldn’t trouble himself to get involved. Avery is not really even part of the Westcott family as its his stepmother that is truly related. However, Avery finds himself part of Anna’s transformation process and surprisingly drawn to the plain, composed woman. Their romance is a surprising one, yet Balogh excels at demonstrating how these two characters compliment one another. (more…)

Den of Wolves is the third and what I hope will not be the final book in the Blackthorn and Grimm series. While I loved Dreamer’s Pool and Tower of Thorns, I can’t help but appreciate the fact that Den of Wolves offers a satisfying conclusion, yet still allows for the possibility of more from Blackthorn and Grim.

Since the first book, I have enjoyed how Marillier combines a fantasy tale with elements that I generally associate more with the mystery genre. In each book, the healer Blackthorn and her man-of-few-words companion, Grimm, tackle a new mystery. That is no different in Den of Wolves. This time Blackthorns helps a troubled young princess, Dalriada, who’s father is building a mysterious house in the woods. Why is this house so important? Why must Dalriada be kept away from the house and the man who is instructing it’s builders? Those are both questions that Blackthorn seeks answers to. And Grimm is uniquely positioned to help as he’s been hired on to help finish the building of the home. (more…)

Kerrigan Byrne has become immensely popular due to her Victorian Rebels series; The Highwayman was a huge hit when it came out and I was seeing it everywhere I read about new books. While I had mixed feelings about the first book, I thought The Hunter was brilliant. If you’re a fan of romances that focus on folks with a darker past, there’s no question that you are reader that will enjoy all of the books in Byrne’s series and this latest is no different.

Colonel Liam MacKenzie is in need of a governess for his two children. After years away from home, Liam has returned home and is determined to do right by his family, something that he finds difficult considering the demons of his past. As a start, Liam hires a governess, Philomena, to get his daughter and son back on track. What Liam doesn’t count on is his mysterious governess and his desire to unravel her secrets. For her part, Mena is essentially in hiding. After being rescued from the “hospital” her husband put her in, Mena has been instructed to hide her true identity, which becomes difficult as she finds herself growing closer to Liam. (more…)

Ghostly Echoes is the third historical mystery featuring Abigail Rook and Mr. Jackaby, a private investigator with an unusual specialty of the unexplained.

Abigail is a transplant from England who fell into employment with the eccentric Jackaby and with this third book it’s clear that Abigail has embraced her investigations into the paranormal and has no intention of going back:

It seemed like only yesterday I had been back home in England, packing for my first term at university. Had someone told me that I would throw it all away and run off to America to commune with ghost and answer to ducks and help mad detectives solve impossible murders, I would have said they were either lying or insane. I would have sorted them on the same shelf in my mental library as those who believe in Ouija boards or sea serpents or honest politicians. That sort of foolishness was not for me. I adhered to facts and science; the impossible was for other people.

A lot can change in a few short months (p. 20).

Indeed they can. (more…)

After reading the fantastic Allegiance of Honor, I was ecstatic to get my hands on Singh’s new novella collection. Don’t get me wrong, I was happy to revisit some of my favourite characters from the Psy-Changeling series in Allegiance, but I did miss the emphasis on romance. Happily, Wild Embrace addressed exactly what I was missing from the novel. Each novella included in this collection offers readers a peak into the world, as well as answers to some questions that have been plaguing fans throughout the series. While all of the novellas are great, my favouite ended up being Flirtation of Fate. (more…)

The Duke of Daring is Darcy Burke’s most recent historical romance and it features a cross-dressing heroine who is prowling gambling dens in search of a fortune so that she and her grandmother can retire to Bath. What this heroine doesn’t count on is having her disguise discovered. Let the romance games begin!

Among the Wicked is the eighth book in Castillo’s suspenseful and dark Kate Burkholder mystery series. I first discovered the series on audiobook and binged through the entire series. After the events of book seven, I was anxious to get my hands on book eight. And while I continue to enjoy the series, I was somewhat disappointed with the book with regards to Kate’s character development. It was a great book, but not my favourite in the series.

In Among the Wicked Kate is asked to go undercover in an Amish community where a suspicious death is discovered. A young woman froze to death and no one in the community is talking about what led to the death, and then there’s the reports of child abuse that are making their way to the police’s ears. So, Kate, a former member of the Amish community, is recruited to assit. Kate’s background makes her a perfect candidate for the undercover roll; she understands the Amish community and she has a commitment to discovering the truth behind the young woman’s death. Despite the misgivings of her partner, Tomasetti, Kate decides the going undercover is something that she has to go. Kate is nothing if she’s not dedicated to protecting the vulnerable. Soon Kate is immersed in her role as a widow in the reclusive community; however, her questions soon stir up more trouble than Kate anticipated. (more…)

I’m not sure exactly what I was expecting going into The Copper Promise, but whatever it was my expectations were far exceeded! The Copper Promise is a fun, fast-paced, swashbuckling adventure and I can’t wait to read more about the adventures of our (mostly) heroic trio.

Wydrin of Crosshaven and Sir Sebastian are mercenaries for hire. Wydrin and Sebastian are recruited for a job by Lord Aaron Frith, a seemingly simple job: infiltrate the Citadel and snag the treasure. Of course, no job is so easy and the unforeseen consequence is that a terrible goddess has been awoken and unleashed her army. You would assume that Wydrin, Sebastian and Frith would naturally want to help defeat this terror, but you would assume wrong. Each of these characters have their own private motivations, and not all mean dealing with the scourge that they have just helped to unleashed. Yet, it’s a problem that just wont go away, and the trio must reunite and figure out how they could possibly kill a seemingly unbeatable dragon and her brood army. Smooth sailing is not in the cards for our heroes. (more…)
