Beach Vacation

Adeline Hays is on the verge of marriage to an odious man; this marriage is not something that she wants but something her father has arranged. To escape this unwanted marriage, Adel decides a compromising is in order, only she compromises herself with the wrong man! Instead of finding her way into the room of her preferred suitor, Adel finds herself in the arms of Edmond Rochester, the duke of Wolverton. I do love a “compromised” theme in my historical romance and Accidentally Compromising the Duke delivers just that. (more…)

Beach Vacation

Elizabeth Sloane is a well-bred socialite; however, as readers soon discover, there’s more to Elizabeth than fashion, gossip, and social calls. Elizabeth is looking for more out of life than her station offers. Instead, Elizabeth wants to open her own stock trading company, in part, due to the fact that her brother’s company appears to be in trouble, and also because she wants to put her brain to work. When her brother denies her wish to open shop, Elizabeth approaches Emmett Cavanaugh, a rich and powerful figure that rose from the slums of Five Points to Fifth Avenue. Little does Elizabeth know that Emmett is no friend of her brothers and decides to help her open her company for reasons of his own.

Initially, Elizabeth and Emmett conspire to create a business partnership; however, private dinners and conspiring family members soon transform this arrangement into a compromising situation. One hasty wedding later, Elizabeth and Emmett are unhappily wed. There is an attraction between them, but multiple misunderstanding on the part of both parties work against the couple. At least, until a snow storm rolls into town… (more…)

“Good Dukes Wear Black” and Get the Girl

Beach Vacation

Good Dukes Wear Black is Manda Collins’ final book in her Lords of Anarchy historical romance trilogy. In the final installment Piers Hamilton, the Duke of Trent, has taken over leadership of the Lords of Anarchy, the disreputable driving club. Trent’s belief that he has turned around the reputation of the club is challenged when Miss Ophelia Dauntry charges Trent to help her find the kidnapped wife of one of the club’s members. This investigation also conveniently throws these two acquaintances together, forcing them to explore the attraction between them.

I enjoyed both of the previous books in the series, A Good Rake is Hard to Find and Good Earl Gone Bad and the final book is just as entertaining. Once again readers are treated to a mystery and a more-or-less trouble free romance.  (more…)

Disappointment in “Happily Bedded Bliss”

The view was nice, but the food was bad

Happily Bedded Bliss should have been my particular brand of historical romance catnip. The hero and heroine are forced to marry when it is discovered that the heroine has created a rather scandalous artistic picture of the hero (which is my delicate way of saying the young heroine sketched the hero naked, without his knowledge). Of course this revealing sketch is discovered and of course, everyone jumps to the wrong conclusions. Ah, a good old compromised romance; just my thing!

Unfortunately, Happily Bedded Bliss did not live up to my expectations. There were some good elements, but on the whole I didn’t like it. The hero was appalling and the heroine was just too good to be true. There were too many moments where I found myself thinking that this one was more of an “old school” historical romance, and I will proudly admit that I am much more of a fan of the more modern historical romance, historical accuracy be damned. “In Search of Scandal” – and a Husband.

25383003In Search of Scandal by Susanne Lord

Genre: Historical Romance

I’d go there again!

In Search of Scandal is a delightful, charming, and sweet historical romance from debut author, Susanne Lord.

Will Repton is a plant collector and sole survivor of a massacre in Tibet. He returns to Victorian London viewed as a hero, but all he wants is to raise enough funds to make a return trip to investigate whether or not a baby girl survived the massacre that he barely escaped. Soliciting the help of his friend, Ben, Will runs into Ben’s sister-in-law, Charlotte Baker – quite possibly the most beautiful woman (and the chattiest) he’s ever met. For Charlotte, her meeting with Will is love at first sight. If only this dashing hero could see her as something other than a frivolous female, and if only he was planning on sticking around for longer than a few months. Happily, events conspire against them both. (more…)

Witty Romance in “All the Ways to Ruin a Rogue”

23432292All the Ways to Ruin a Rogue by Sophie Jordan
Avon: July 28, 2015 (Historical Romance)*

Beach Vacation

All the Ways to Ruin a Rogue is an enemies-to-lovers historical romance, with an emphasis on the enemies part. However, animosity wasn’t always the defeat mode of conversation for Lady Aurelia and Max, Viscount Camden. When she first met her brother’s friend Aurelia was infatuated, at least until she stumbled upon a scene that shattered her romantic illusions at fifteen. From that point forward Aurelia and Max have been at odds, breaking into fights at family functions, trading barbs and insults, the general animosity that masks a whole heck of a lot of attraction. Compromised! “Love in the Time of Scandal”

Beach vacation vintagesuitcase3vintagesuitcase3vintagesuitcase3

Love in the Time of Scandal is Linden’s third in her Scandalous series, each book tied together by it’s heroine’s interest in the notorious book 50 Ways to Sin (a very intentional allusion to Fifty Shades of Grey, Regency style).

This one follows Penelope Weston who finds herself compromised after going to the aid of a close friend. Rescued by Benedict Lennox, Penelope has no choice but to marry the very man that once wanted to marry her sister.

Benedict, like Penelope, is initially reluctant to marry Penelope; however, while she’s not exactly what he was looking for in a wife, she is an heiress, which is exactly what he needs if he ever wishes to be free of his father’s control. But it just might turn out that Penelope was what he was looking for all along. (more…)

I’d go there again!

Lady Sophia Kendall is days away from coming into her power. As a noble born woman, and thirty-second in line for the throne, Sophia is a powerful commodity and will become even more of one if her magical abilities are strong. Before Sophia can be carefully initiated as a royal witch, Sophia is forced to flee the city with Lieutenant Cameron Mackenzie, who happens to be accompanying her in the city when the capital is attacked. Suddenly Sophia finds herself an unbound witch, more powerful than she ever imagined herself to be, and also more dangerous. One hasty wedding later, Sophia learns a lot about why witches are bound so quickly, but this knowledge might come at a price. (more…)

The Matchmaker Becomes “The Spinster Bride”

23278376The Spinster Bride by Jane Goodger
Kensington: February 2, 2015 (Historical Romance)*

My rating: Beach vacation vintagesuitcase3vintagesuitcase3vintagesuitcase3

The Spinster Bride was a cute historical romance featuring a young woman who would rather not marry (even though she must) and a man determined to find himself leg shackled as soon as he can be sure that the woman will make it to the alter. Throw these two together and romance was bound to happen.

Lady Marjorie Penwhistle is almost on the shelf and her mother is determined to find her a titled husband. What’s so sad about this situation is how Marjorie’s mother is essentially living vicariously through Marjorie. Marjorie is everything her mother is not: beautiful, popular. She wants Marjorie to be a success because she never was. Unfortunately, all this attention on Marjorie is at the expense of her brother who is a little bit different and those around him take advantage of him. To protect her brother from being disinherited, Marjorie agrees to finally put some effort into the marriage mart, unfortunately the only man that she is attracted to is not a peer. (more…)

Margaret Andrews is a confirmed spinster. After being jilted by her fiancé, she has placed herself firmly on the shelf, and clings fiercely to her notions of propriety. When her sister is forced into an elopement, Margaret is determined to rescue her. But she’s well aware that she cannot travel to Scotland on her own; she must trust an old family friend, Cain Sinclair, a man far below her station.

Cain Sinclair has always carried a torch for Margaret, even proposing to her when they were younger. Of course, Margaret rebuffed him in hopes of finding a better match. While Cain doesn’t exactly blame her for making that choice all those years ago, those feelings have not gone away, and spending time together traveling is a bittersweet torture for him. However, Cain can’t ignore her plea, so the pair set off in pursuit only to have their plan derailed almost from the start. (more…)
